CARLING CUP THIRD ROUND DRAW – SECOND ROUND RESULTS

CARLING CUP THIRD ROUND DRAW – SECOND ROUND RESULTS

The draw has been made for the Third Round of the 2010-11 Carling Cup, England’s Football League Cup competition, which pits all 92 members of the League in a knock-out style tournament.  The Third Round matches will be played the week of September 20.

In what is clearly the draw of the round, Tottenham Hotspur will host bitter North London Rivals Arsenal at White Hart Lane.  Both teams enter the competition at the this stage, as the Carling Cup allows passage to the Third Round for teams that are battling for places in European Competition.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has long used this competition to provide experience for his younger talent, but he and his side have died by that very sword at the hands of Tottenham in a 5-1 Semifinal defeat at White Hart Lane in 2008.

The North-London Derby will not be the only all-Premier League tie in the Third Round.  Chelsea will host newly promoted Championship Winners Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion will be at home to take on Manchester City.

Sunderland will take on West Ham United, Stoke and Fulham will renew their relegation battle from last Premier League season and Aston Villa’s US International goalkeeper Brad Freidel will lead the villans back to his old club Blackburn Rovers.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle will return to Burnley, a side he recently managed.

2010 Carling Cup Champions Manchester United will travel to Championship side Scunthorpe and Liverpool will host Northampton.

Liverpool and current holders Manchester United got relatively easy ties as they face struggling League Two side Northampton and Championship side Scunthorpe respectively.
